Fire alarms and fire prevention services for businesses in Yorkshire

Following on from last week’s post on our fire alarm and fire prevention services, this week we’re going to outline the different types of fire alarms we install.

We understand that all businesses are different and whether you run a shop, office, warehouse, factory or farm, we’ll work closely with you to design and install a system which meets your budget and requirements.

When installing a fire alarm system we take a close look at the individual requirements for that particular business. A care home, for example, will have very different requirements to a small retail premises and it’s important to ensure that everyone who uses or lives in the building is adequately protected.

Our experience covers everything from small, conventional fire alarm systems, through to large, state-of-the-art intelligent systems. Once we’ve installed your new system, we are also able to offer a range of after-care and maintenance services, designed to ensure your system is reliable and your health and safety obligations continue to be met.

Next week we’ll outline our BAFE Fire Safety accreditation and what this means for your business.

Fire protection systems designed and installed by Dalec

Non-domestic premises must be protected by an adequate fire protection system if they are to meet current national building regulations. Here at Dalec we offer a wide range of fire protection services, designed to provide businesses with peace of mind that their business is protected and is in line with building regulations.

In this week’s blog post we’ll be outlining the main issues surrounding the requirements for fire detection and prevention systems, followed by posts over the next few weeks on the type of systems we install and our BAFE accredited services.

Do I need a fire detection or fire alarm system for my business premises?

The majority of non-domestic premises require fire detection and alarm systems to be installed; from schools, nurseries and care homes, through to offices, shops, factories, hotels, cafes and restaurants. This means that unless your work from your own home, it’s highly likely that you’ll need to install a fire alarm and fire detection system.

The best place to start is by having a fire risk assessment which will not only tell if you need a fire alarm/detection system but will also help to determine which type of system needs to be installed.

What are the different types of fire alarm and detection systems available?

A wide range of different systems are available and the most appropriate system for your premises will depend on it’s size and the nature of your business. Basic system include just one or two manually operated call points, whilst complex networked systems can include numerous fire detectors, call points and alarm sounders.

Home Security and CCTV Leeds

Is your business protected by an access control system?

Do you have access control security systems in your business? If not, your business could be vulnerable to theft and even break ins. Business environments are often very fast paced so it’s understandable if security is low on the priority list for many business owners. However, access control is becoming more and more popular as it’s a very efficient way to keep the building safe.

Access keys are simple security systems that are designed to help businesses monitor people coming in and out of the building. They provide a very powerful countermeasure against thefts and break ins inside the business, helping to protect valuable stock or sensitive areas. This is especially if you have a large office environment as it can be hard to realise how many people are coming in and out of the building.

The aim of access keys is to keep businesses secure and monitor everyone who comes in and out of the building. There are lots of options for access control for different buildings from key cards/FOBs to keypads. Nowadays it also possible to install a system which uses facial recognition or fingerprint scanning. The best thing about access control is its efficiency and ease of use.

Domestic security systems designed and installed by Dalec

As regular readers of our blog will know, here at Dalec we work to share information and advice on how to safeguard your property. Protecting your home, garage or shed is important and there are lots of simple ways to protect your property from burglary. Here are just a couple of ideas to help you minimise the risk of a break in.

Don’t fall victim to crime – deter thieves from entering your home

Ensuring your home is protected is as simple as having a few deterrents in place. The majority of burglaries are carried out on an opportune basis. This means that when a burglar sees that your home is secure, they’re much more likely to look elsewhere and target another property. Here at Dalec we install a wide range of simple but highly effective security measures; from sensor security lights designed to protect the exterior of a property, through to state-of-the-art wireless security systems and CCTV cameras.

Protect your property with a security alarm

There are many homes which have outdated security systems; these are often unreliable and as a result tend not to be used. Installing a fully functioning, reliable security system is probably the most effective step you can take to protect your property. Regardless of the size of your home or your budget, we’ll have a system to suit you. We’re always happy to provide you with advice or a no-obligation quote at a time to suit you and whether you have an existing system which needs repairing, or would like advice on choosing a new alarm, we can help.

Security lighting – a simple but effective security solution

Security lighting is often underestimated in terms of the protection it can offer. Security lighting can an effective way to deter intruders and we provide a range of lighting options, designed to suit all sizes of property. If you live in a remote area or quiet street, security lighting can prove particularly helpful. Motion-sensor lighting, for example, will not only put-off potential intruders, it could also help you find your doorway when it’s dark!

Fire safety advice for landlords in Leeds

The tragic fire which devastated Grenfell Tower in London in 2017 continues to be a shocking reminder of the importance of fire safety in high-rise buildings. As the events at Grenfell Tower have shown, fire safety is something which cannot be compromised upon and is something which is literally a matter of life and death for landlords.

At Dalec we have many years of expertise in working with landlords to provide fire and electrical services for landlords, including the installation, maintenance and servicing of fire alarm systems, heat and smoke detectors.

It goes without saying that prevention is so much better than cure and when it comes to fire protection in high rise buildings, the installation of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors will significantly reduce the risk of death or injury.

Where smoke alarms are concerned it is important to remember that the more you have the better. Having multiple alarms gives tenants a much better chance of escape in the event of a fire but in large, multi-storey flats or tower blocks, a network of interconnected alarms is the safest option.

There are a huge range of different fire alarm systems available, with options designed to meet the safety requirements of high-rise buildings, including flats and tower blocks. Different buildings call for different systems and here at Dalec we are happy to provide advice on the most suitable way to protect your tenants from the risk of fire.

Home security systems installed in Leeds by Dalec

The university of Carolina proved that 41% of burglars are likely to retreat a home if they come across a security system. Installing a home security system is a very important step to improve the safety of your home.

Here’s a guide on the pros and cons of installing a security system in your home.

  • Protection

Home security systems provide a lot of protection for your home whether you are in or out of the house. Some systems can call the authorities for you if you are unavailable. Today they can even store footage via the cloud, therefore if the burglars managed to break the system all your evidence will be safe.

  • Remote viewing

Almost all home security systems today come with an app that can be downloaded onto a smartphone. This way wherever you have data or wifi you are able to see what’s going on in your home. This can relieve any stress you have about burglary if you are going on a long journey or away from home for a period of time.

  • Cheaper home insurance

By installing a home security system you may be able to lower your home insurance. If you live in an area with high crime rates the cost of your home insurance could drop even more.

This could make the cost of installing a system more appealing for people hesitant about the cost.

Here are some downsides you should consider before investing into a system;

  • Difficult to set up

Installing a home security system is usually a simple process, however depending on your home there may be wiring issues that could arise. These issues aren’t very common but they are still worth thinking about.

  • False alarms

If you have a keypad system a child could possibly trip the alarm off accidentally or you could accidentally type in the wrong code. This could potentially cause law enforcement to show up and you may end up having to pay a substantial fine.

  • Cost

On average a security system for your home could cost from  £125-£300 to install and then if you are getting a professionally monitored system this could cost between £15 -£45 a month.

This is an investment that some people just won’t be able to afford.

Another thing to consider about home security systems is the fact that there are so many options from wireless to wired solutions, professionally monitored solutions and even DIY solutions. This can ensure you that you can install home security systems in any type of home environment.

Electrical plug socket safety

The new university and college year is just around the corner and looking for student accommodation can be unnerving, especially if you’re doing it for the first time. There are lots of things to consider when choosing accommodation, the main priority however should be safety. Too many people will think about space and cost before safety and end up regretting it later in the year.

Here at Dalec we offer a large range of electrical services specifically designed to help students and landlords ensure that their properties are safe. From electrical testing through to, maintenance repairs and appliance installations, we take care of all aspects of electrical safety.

Here’s a guide on a few things to keep in mind when looking for student accommodation in Leeds.

Safety Advice for student accommodation

There are danger signs to look for before you move in, such as;

  • Scorch marks on plugs or sockets:

This is a sign of loose wiring, plugs that are scorched are known to overheat and could even cause a fire.

  • Old fashioned electrics such as light switches and plug sockets:

These can be very common in cheap accommodation. Watch out for this because it’s not worth the risk. Old fashioned electrics are also known to overheat and are likely to cause a fire.

  • Frayed wires:

If you notice any frayed wires around the space, alert your landlord immediately. Frayed wires can pose threats such as electrocution and are also a fire hazard.

Electrical installations, maintenance and repairs

The new university term is just a couple of weeks away and whether you’re moving to Leeds or have already been here for a while, we hope you enjoy living in this part of the world as much as we do!

Moving away from home to study usually often living in rented accommodation and if you’re planning on moving into a flat or shared house owned by a private landlord, it’s important that you’re aware of the importance of electrical safety. Although landlords are governed by a strict set of rules and regulations regarding electrical safety, it’s still a good idea to be aware of your rights and to know how to spot any potential problems.

Firstly it is your landlord’s responsibility to ensure that the property is safe BEFORE you move in, and that it is maintained in a safe condition for the duration of your tenancy. When viewing prospective properties, it’s sensible to make visual checks: no loose electrical wires should be visible and burn or scorch marks on or above plug sockets are a clear indication that the electrics aren’t up to scratch.

Houses which have multiple occupants must have a periodic electrical safety inspection carried out at least every five years. However, landlords with properties which do not fall into this bracket are not obliged to carry out electrical safety inspections.

All appliances provided with the property must be safe and at the very least have the CE marking to prove that they meet the requirements of European law. In order to meet these requirements, landlords must carry out regular safety checks to ensure all appliances are safe and working as they should be.
