We’ve all been there: being woken up in the middle of the night by the beeping of a smoke alarm with a low battery!

Of course it’s natural to want to a decent night’s sleep and most of us will get up and remove the battery.  However, it’s essential to make sure that you replace the battery as soon as possible – preferably the next day!  It’s also important to test your smoke alarms regularly – we recommend once a week – as this is the best way to ensure reliability and give peace of mind.  Not only does the alarm need to be tested, it’s also a good idea to make sure that the alarm is clean and free from dust.

Having a smoke alarm that isn’t working simply isn’t worth the risk.  Sadly people are killed in fires in their homes every year and these are deaths that could have been prevented with smoke alarms.  Here at Dalec we’re professionals in all aspects of fire protection and if you would like information on protecting your home from fire – whether through smoke alarms or a more complex fire protection system – we’re happy to help.

When water and electricity mix the results can be deadly which is why your bathroom can potentially be the most dangerous room in the home when it comes to electricity safety.

It’s important to remember that sockets are not allowed in bathrooms or shower rooms unless there is sufficient space for them to be fitted at least three metres away from a shower or bath.  This does not apply to shaver supply units.

Bathroom lights should, ideally, be enclosed ceiling lights and not light fittings that hang down.  A ceiling-mounted pull-cord switch is the safest way to turn on and off bathroom lights; ordinary light switches are dangerous if used by damp or wet hands.

The safest way to keep the bathroom warm is with a central heating radiator but if you do have to have a bathroom heater, it’s essential that it is fitted (it should be fixed) at a safe distance from the shower or bath.  Electrical showers must be supplied on a circuit directly from the fusebox.

It goes without saying but any mains-supplied appliances – hairdryers, radios etc – must never be used in the bathroom as this can result in serious injury or even death.

Bathrooms have special requirements for electrical installations as any electrical work has to comply with Part P of Building Regulations.  If you are considering having electrical installation work carried out in your bathroom, it is essential to use a registered company such as Dalec.  We are registered members of the ECA – the Electrical Contractors Association – which means that we have to undergo regular, rigorous technical assessments to ensure that our work is safe and installations meet industry standards.

If you are a landlord in Leeds, there’s no doubt you’re aware of your obligations when it comes to electrical safety in your rental properties.  However, according to Electrical Safety First, many UK landlords are putting their tenants at risk of fire or serious injury through poorly maintained or badly installed electrical installations.

In brief, landlords are, by law, required to ensure that electrical installations in a property are safe, both before a tenant moves in, and for the duration of their rental agreement.  Houses which are occupied by multiple tenants must undergo an electrical safety inspection every five years.  Properties which are not occupied by multiple tenants are not required by law to be inspected but it is recommended that an inspection is carried out by registered electrician every five years.

Any appliances which are provided by landlords must be safe and at the very least, carry the CE marking.

It is also recommended that landlords use only registered electricians to carry out any work on their rental properties and that regular safety checks are carried out on appliances, as part of the rental agreement for the property.

Here at Dalec we are registered electricians working in Leeds – if you would like further information on any aspect of our electrical services, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Electrical safety is vital but becomes especially important if you have children.  There are a number of things you can do to keep your kids and your whole family safe.

Many parents assume that the blank plastic covers that can be used to cover electrical sockets are the best way to prevent electrical shocks.  However, regular sockets are generally safe and using covers will not prevent an electric shock if the socket itself is badly installed and unsafe.

The very best way to reduce the risk of electrical fires and to be safe from electric shocks is to have a fusebox with RCD protection, or to use a plug-in RCD protector.

Appliance cords must be kept out of reach of children, especially cords which are attached to hot items such as electric kettles, irons or hairdryers.  Appliance cords must never be left unconnected and plugged in – mobile phone chargers for example – as your child may be tempted to put the end of the cable in their mouth.

Finally, don’t forget to unplug appliances when they’re not in use!

Summer seems to be here at long last and with this weekend being predicted to be the warmest of the year so far, most of us will be keeping our windows open in an effort to cool our homes down.

However open windows present a security risk and if you’re going out – even just a quick trip to the shops – it’s very important to make sure all your windows and doors are locked.  Window locks are simple and quick to fit and because they are a highly effective way to add an extra security feature to your home, we highly recommend them.

Window locks are especially effective when used on ground floor windows and patio doors.  These windows are often the first to be targeted by thieves – an easy way to gain entry to a property – gaining access through a window is often the first thing that an intruder will try.

If you’re interested in installing window locks on your windows, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

If you’re considering having an intruder alarm installed in your home or business, it’s important to remember that by choosing an alarm installation company that is registered by the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board is the best way to ensure that your alarm is installed correctly.

The effects of a burglary can potentially be devastating and it’s not worth taking the risk of using a second-rate alarm installer.  Here at Dalec we are SSAIB registered installers and by choosing a registered installation company such as ourselves, you’ll not only have the peace of mind that your alarm has been installed correctly, your alarm system will be installed and maintained to meet or exceed the requirements of your insurance.

The SSAIB will only certificate alarm installation companies that can demonstrate through their procedures and an inspection process that they have the required managerial and technical competence.

If you would like further information on the SSIAB registration scheme, please visit the SSAIB website or for details of our alarm installation services in Leeds, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The long summer evenings are perfect for sitting out in the garden and if you’re thinking of installing some garden lighting, you need to spend a little time thinking about how to install it safely.

Before installing garden lighting you’ll need to make sure you have a transformer – a device which is used to transfer voltage from one level to another.  A transformer is an essential requirement for the majority of garden lighting because garden lighting usually operates at 12 volts whilst the power outlets in your home usually operate at 240 volts.

The number of garden lights which can be operated from a single transformer is limited: you’ll need to look at the wattage of each individual light and multiple that by the total number of lights you intend to use.  For example, if each single light works at 20 watts and you want to use eight of these lights in your garden, you will need a transformer of at least 160 watts.

The cables you use to power your garden lighting can, in theory, be as long as you want, however power will be lost as the number of lights and the length of the cable increases.  Ideally the cable should be kept as short as possible and depending on the size of your garden; a number of transformers may be required.

It is also important to consider other issues when installing garden lighting such as using the correct cables and our services are available to cover this.

When water and electricity mix the results can be deadly.  With this in mind, we thought we’d give you a few tips on bathroom safety.

When it comes to electrical safety, the bathroom can become the most dangerous room in the house.  Electrical installations in bathrooms come with their own set of special safety requirements and most electrical work must comply with Part P of Building Regulations.

For any electrical work in the bathroom we strongly recommend using registered electricians such as Dalec.

Power sockets- with the exception of shaver supply sockets – are not allowed in bathrooms unless they can be installed at a safe distance of at least three metres from the sink, bath or shower.  Shaver supply sockets must also be installed at a safe distance from the shower or bath to avoid contact with water.

The best type of bathroom lighting is a recessed light or a light that is enclosed and does not hang down.  Ceiling mounted pull-cord switches are the safest option for bathroom lights as everyday light switches can be dangerous when operated with damp hands.

The safest way to heat your bathroom is with a central heating radiator but if you do have an electric heater, it must be installed at a safe distance from the sink, shower or bath.  Again, a pull-cord switch outside the bathroom is the safest way to operate a bathroom heater.

Electric showers should be installed by a qualified electrician and must be supplied on their own circuit, directly from the fuse box.

Last and by no means least, never, ever bring a mains-powered appliance such as a hairdryer into the bathroom as the results can be deadly.
