Autumn is definitely here and now that the nights are drawing in it’s getting dark earlier and earlier.  With this in mind we thought we’d cover the importance of lighting the outside areas of your property.

Lighting the outside of your home is very important and is a very effective way to help deter intruders.  Outside lighting is available nowadays in a huge range of designs, with lighting combinations suitable for large detached houses through to terraces and flats.  Outside lighting is not only important for security though as being able to see is very important when trying to open your front door late at night!

If you’d like to improve the outside lighting on your property, you need to begin by thinking about where you need the light, and which areas should be well lit in terms of security.  A light over the front and back doors are obvious choices, but don’t forget other areas such as over patio doors or on the side of the house to help illuminate your driveway or a passageway between the house and garage, for example.

Outside is available in a wide range of types of lighting area available, from dusk ‘til dawn through to sensor security lighting. Dusk ‘til dawn lighting will automatically come on when it goes dark and switch off again at first light.  This type of lighting is increasingly popular with our customers and is a great way to avoid lights being on all the time – especially when you are away.

Sensor security lighting is triggered by movement and is an effective way to deter intruders.  This type of lighting does have its drawbacks though and remember that the light will turn on even when your cat walks across the lawn!  Security lights do need to be positioned carefully to ensure that they don’t shine directly into neighbouring properties.
