Here at Dalec we offer a range of electrical services designed to meet the needs of domestic customers and if you’re thinking of buying a new kitchen appliance for Christmas, you’ll find that our installation service is quick, efficient and reliable.

Before buying a new appliance it’s important to check that the electrics in your kitchen are up to the job.  According to official figures, over half of the accidental house fires in the UK start in the kitchen and with this in mind; you may need to take expert advice to stay safe.

A number of things should be taken into consideration when fitting kitchen appliances.  You must make sure that electrical sockets or switches are fitted a safe distance away from the sink and any appliances which are to be fitted under a worktop – fridge, washing machine or dishwasher – should ideally be controlled by a switched fuse connection unit which has been safely mounted above the worktop.

If you would like further advice or information on our electrical installation services, please don’t hesitate to get in touch today.

Energy monitors can be very easily confused with smart meters however they are completely different devices.  We’ll start by clearing up any confusion: an energy monitor will help you to understand how much electricity you use, whilst a smart meter sends information about how much energy you use directly to your energy provider.

Energy monitors are relatively simple gadgets that are designed to give you an estimate of how much electricity you are using at any given time.  Energy monitors are sometimes also described as electricity monitors or electricity usage meters.  Relatively cheap to buy and widely available, an energy monitor is likely to cost around £40 (some energy providers supply them for free) and are very simple to install.

The majority of energy monitors will allow you to see what your real-time energy usage is in units of energy used and the cost or carbon emissions.  In addition, some monitors offer extra features such alarms designed to let you know when you reached a pre-set daily target for electricity usage.

Energy monitors can help you keep track of how much electricity you are using and to pinpoint which appliances use the most energy.  Once armed with this information you should, ideally be able to reduce your electricity usage and cut your energy bills accordingly.

The days are getting longer and hopefully it won’t be too long before its warm enough to get outside the light the barbeque! Garden lighting is a great way to help you get the most out of the garden and there’s now a huge range of different types of garden lighting available, from solar powered lights to highlight borders and planting, through to lights designed to be recessed into paving slabs or decking.

Whilst garden lighting can look stunning, it does need to be installed correctly if it’s to be safe.  We all know that water and electricity don’t mix and when badly installed lighting comes into contact with rainwater or even dew, the results can be catastrophic.

If you’re considering installing lighting in your garden, you need to check that the lighting you choose is suitable for outdoor use.  Strings of lights, for example, look stunning when draped in the branches of a tree or along a fence but to be safe, they must be lights which are designed to be used outside.  This applies to any lighting you use in your garden and if in doubt, don’t use it.

Here at Dalec we recommend that all garden lighting is installed by a qualified, certified electrician.  Our electrical services are available to residential and commercial customers throughout Leeds. If you’re thinking about installing featuring lighting in your garden or business premises, why not get in touch with us first for expert advice?

If you (or your kids) were lucky enough to get a new bike from Santa this Christmas, don’t forget to ensure that your shed, garage or bike store is adequately protected from theft.

Despite the fact that many homeowners ensure that their home is protected with a security alarm, garages and sheds are often left exposed and at risk from burglars.

When you stop to consider that your garage can be home to some very valuable equipment indeed – whether it’s expensive bikes (some can cost as much as a small car!), power tools, sports equipment or even a lawn mower – protecting outdoor buildings seems like a very good idea indeed!

At Dalec our expertise covers all areas of home security and we are happy to offer guidance on the best ways to protect your shed or garage.  We find that homeowners often don’t realise that many home security systems can be installed to incorporate sheds, garages and out buildings. It’s also worth bearing in mind that if you already have a home security system, it’s often possible to incorporate your shed or garage into any existing system.

Security lighting is also proven to be a highly effective intruder deterrent and by installing dusk-to-dawn security lighting or motion sensor lighting; you’ll be providing another level of protection for your shed, garage or out-buildings. Why not get in touch for details of our security services and alarms?

We’d like to wish all our customers a very Happy New Year!  We hope you’ve had a happy and relaxing Christmas and if you’re anything the team at Dalec, you’ll be looking forward to a busy 2015!

This is a great opportunity to start another year of blog posts with a quick reminder on the importance of electrical safety in the kitchen.  Many people don’t realise that the kitchen is the most dangerous room in the house.  Over 50% of fires in the home start in the kitchen and with this in mind, electrical safety in the kitchen is absolutely vital.  The majority of kitchen fires are due to faulty wiring, pans left unattended or electrical sockets coming into contact with water.  Provided you follow a few simple safety rules you’ll be able to ensure that your kitchen is a much safer place to be.

Your kitchen is likely to boast a large number of electrical appliances and gadgets so having an adequate supply of electrical sockets is essential.  Never, ever overload sockets and regardless of how small your kitchen may be, you must make sure that electrical sockets are positioned well away from taps and any other sources of water.

If used incorrectly, even if electrical kitchen appliances meet current British safety standards, they can still be potentially dangerous.  Toasters, microwaves and kettles should always be turned off when not in use and it’s important to ensure that electric chords are kept well away from hot surfaces such as cooker hobs.  It goes without saying that small appliances should never be positioned under or near curtains or blinds.

It’s important to remember that if you’re planning on moving house or are considering having a new kitchen fitted, it’s essential that you choose registered electrical safety professionals such as Dalec for advice on the wiring in your kitchen.  We are specialists in all types of electrical installation and are happy to offer guidance on kitchen safety – from the best places for plug sockets through to safety checks on electrical wiring of any age.

There’s nothing like a bargain and most of us like to save money whenever we can. However, when it comes to buying electrical goods, it’s important to put safety before any savings you might make by buying cheap counterfeit goods.

Electrical goods which are available at heavily discounted prices should always be treated with caution; it’s important to remember that they could be fake and designed to look like a well-known brand or second hand. Buying fake electrical goods can be very risky indeed as at best they are simply a waste of money, or at worst highly dangerous.

Over the last few years the range of fake electrical goods available has increased dramatically with the most popular being mobile phone chargers, games consoles and hair styling products. Fake electrical goods are almost guaranteed to contain faulty or incorrect components which are likely to overheat when the item is used, leading to an increased risk of electric shock or fire.

Unfortunately the increase in online shopping hasn’t helped and buying fake or counterfeit electrical goods is easier than ever. The very best way to protect yourself is to only buy electrical items from reputable store – whether it’s through an online site or in a high street shop.

If you would like advice on any aspect of electrical safety in the home, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
